In what looks to be a record setting weekend for an R-Rated film, Deadpool is a guaranteed blockbuster. After opening up to a $260 million global opening, Deadpool is on track to becoming the highest ever grossing R-Rated film of all time. The $135 million domestic haul already surpasses every single X-Men opening weekend (X-Men: The Last Stand had $103m opening).
If there was ever an under-dog story, then this film is it. Tim Miller’s Deadpool was a movie that was stuck in the pre-production rut for years. The fans wanted it, but Fox never wanted to take the gamble on the character after a poor showing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds was adamant about playing Deadpool, a role he was born for, and would constantly petition the fans to speak up on social media for the chance to make the film. Fox finally had their hand forced after leaked test footage became an instant viral sensation in the summer of 2014.
The rest is history.
